Description

ECU Health Medical Center’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Program is seeking a Clinical Doctoral Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Intern to join our Marriage and Family Therapy Program. Located on the campus of ECU Health Medical Center, a 900-bed academic medical center in Eastern North Carolina, the internship offers a comprehensive training experience within a collaborative, interdisciplinary healthcare environment.

The 75-bed Inpatient Rehabilitation Center serves a diverse post-acute population of adults and children with a wide range of medical diagnoses and disabling conditions. ECU Health Medical Center is affiliated with the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine and serves as the primary teaching hospital for the university’s schools of nursing, medicine, and allied health.

The doctoral intern will be an integral member of an interdisciplinary treatment team that includes physicians and residents, nurses, case managers, medical family therapists, speech-language pathologists, physical and occupational therapists, and recreation therapists. The program is C.A.R.F.-accredited and includes specialty programs in:

· Brain Injury

· Stroke/Neurorehabilitation

· Spinal Cord Injury

· General Medicine

These specialty programs provide a rich environment for collaborative care and advanced clinical learning. The intern will have opportunities to rotate across programs, gaining in-depth experience with a variety of diagnoses and exploring their unique biopsychosocial and spiritual implications for patients and families.

Clinical Responsibilities and Training

Consistent with ECU Health Medical Center’s commitment to patient- and family-centered care, the intern will help patients and families understand, process, and adapt to their medical conditions and the life-changing events associated with disability and illness.

Clinical responsibilities will include providing:

· Individual, family, and group therapy

· Clinical consultations to members of the interdisciplinary treatment team

· Participation in weekly interdisciplinary team conferences

· Participation in family conferences

· Clinical education and presentations for interdisciplinary staff

The internship provides the opportunity to accrue a substantial number of clinical hours toward professional licensure. Clinical supervision will be provided by an AAMFT Approved Supervisor or AAMFT Approved Supervisor Candidate.

As part of the doctoral internship experience, the intern will also have the opportunity to provide clinical supervision to Master’s-level interns and work toward developing the competencies required for AAMFT Approved Supervisor status.

Professional Development and Academic Opportunities

The intern will have numerous opportunities to expand their professional and academic skills through:

· Development and implementation of an individualized research project

· Interdisciplinary educational presentations for medical and rehabilitation staff

· Program development and evaluation

· Teaching opportunities within East Carolina University’s Human Development and Family Science program

· Participation in clinical supervision and mentorship of MFT trainees

· Opportunities to collaborate with interdisciplinary faculty, clinicians, and trainees on research and educational initiatives

· Opportunity for presentation of clinical, research, or educational content at Grand Rounds

The intern will also receive training and certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention.

Supervision and Support

The program provides on-site clinical support and supervision within a collaborative learning environment. The combination of direct clinical practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, supervision, teaching, research, and program development provides doctoral interns with a comprehensive experience designed to support their professional growth and preparation for advanced practice in medical family therapy.
